Najila Naderi is currently working in the History Department at Columbia University. She received her BA in English Literature at Stony Brook University. She is extremely fond of reading, writing, and attending art shows. Najila and her family are originally from Afghanistan, and migrated to New York in 1987. She grew up in Flushing, Queens, and has lived in New York for most of her life. Najila and her siblings were lucky to have parents who cared about providing a strong Islamic foundation for them by having a teacher come over their house after school and teaching them how to read the Quran. However, it wasn’t until college that Najila learned to go about seeking a more personal connection and attachment with Allah and Islam. Najila feels that it is very important for children to be exposed to a loving, and spiritual sense of Islam at a young age, and for that to be maintained throughout their adolescence. She had helped raise her two younger siblings, has been around many younger cousins, and now has an adorable new niece that’s the apple of her family’s eye. Najila hopes to help provide a well-rounded and beautiful example of what Islam is for her.
