A Refugee’s Story Unites an Interfaith Community
The harrowing story of one immigrant brought together members of Atlanta's interfaith community for an evening of discussion at Atlanta's Temple Beth Tikvah. Here, the crowd listened to the story of Mohammed Al Samawi, a peace activist, refugee, and author whose book, The Fox Hunt: A Refugee's Memoir of Coming to America, was featured at the Atlanta Jewish Book Festival in November. A new initiative at the University of Washington aims to show students all they have in common across lines of faith. The event, called One of Many, brought students together to discuss life experiences and experiences with faith. While the event did not draw hard conclusions about how to best foster an open interfaith environment, the participants came away feeling more connected to one another, with one participant saying, "I've never felt more connected to my friends." 2019 marks the fourth anniversary of the murders of Muslim students Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha, who were killed by their neighbor in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This tragic event has inspired the local interfaith community to take action with a food drive, which has collected enough food to provide more than 21,000 means to the needy.
